Welcome to Mogale City (Krugersdorp) - the treasure chest of the west

Mogale City, previously known as Krugersdorp Local Council, was named after Chief Mogale, the young heir to the Po Chiefdom of the Batswana. The Po tribe, one of the original tribes, occupied the territory now known as Mogale City. They occupied an area that stretched from the Magaliesberg in the west to the present day Northcliff Ridge in the east, to the Vaal River in the southwest and Haartebeespoort Dam in the northwest.

Krugersdorp, the centre of the Mogale City region, is equidistant from both Johannesburg and Pretoria and a short drive away from the Magaliesberg mountains, with its wide range of luxury and budget accommodation.

This town, the industrial hub of Western Gauteng, with its mild climate, interesting topography and rich cultural and historical background, was founded in 1887 by MW Pretorius when gold was discovered on his farm Paardekraal. The mining industry has been an integral part of Krugersdorp ever since.

The region has experienced a tremendous growth in tourism over the past two years, boosted by increasing interest in palaeoanthropology. This is the site where the famous "Mrs Ples" (Plesianthropus Transvaalenis) was discovered by the Munsieville community, who informed Dr Robert Broom of their find in 1947.

What towns make up Mogale City?

The municipal border encompasses the towns of Krugersdorp, Kagiso, Muldersdrift, Munsieville, Tarlton, Hekpoort, Magaliesburg, Azaadville, as well as the industrial areas including Chamdor, Factoria and Boltonia.

Where is it?

Mogale City is situated west of Johannesburg. The area is easily accessible from all major centres.
